Zinfandel

Zinfandel's black-skinned grapes produce a robust red wine with moderate tannin and high acidity. There is also a White Zinfandel; a semi-sweet rosé popular in the US that comprises 85% of the total Zinfandel production. White Zin is considered to offer less complexity and sophistication than Red, though it is a popular wine, especially for those new to wine. Zinfandel grapes are grown across the US, although California boasts the largest production. Depending on whether the grapes were grown in a cooler or warmer climate, the varietal can offer jam, blueberry, black pepper, cherry, plum, boysenberry, cranberry, and licorice flavors. Zinfandel grapes produce juice with high sugar content and although they ripen early, if left to further ripen, they can be used to make dessert wines. Zinfandel’s sweetness pairs well with turkey, pork, bacon, ham, and veal, as well as with spiced barbecue dishes and curry.
