Tempranillo

Tempranillo is a black grape variety with a thick skin used in making full-bodied, ruby red wines. It was first planted in Spain, but is now grown around the world. Tempranillo grapes ripen several weeks earlier than most Spanish red grapes. The signature grape of Spain, Tempranillo goes by more than a dozen different names around the world, depending on where it’s cultivated. There is even a rare, albino Tempranillo grape that exists in Rioja. Tempranillo is often blended with other varieties because of its relatively neutral profile, moderate tannins, and low acidity and sugar content. In fact, almost every red wine from Rioja and Ribera del Duero has Tempranillo as its base. Tempranillo wines’ aromas and flavors can include blackcurrants, cherries, prunes, chocolate, berries, plum, tobacco, vanilla, leather, and herb. Tempranillo pairs well with Indian dishes, stronger fish, or juicy hamburgers. It should be served between 57 - 61°F.
