Syrah

Syrah is a dark-skinned red wine grape that is planted more in France than in any other country. The grape is hardy and is high in both acidity and tannins, which make it a useful blending grape. Syrah wines age well and continue to evolve for years or even for multiple decades. Argentina, Australia, Chile, Italy, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, and the U.S. are a few of the countries that produce Syrah. Old World Syrahs have more earthy-herbaceous aromas, while New World-styled Syrahs are typically fruitier with lots of spice. Syrah’s wine aromas in its youth include floral, white and black pepper, tanned leather, and smoky. Additional scents and flavors of Syrah wines include blackberries, plums, black cherries, flowers, spice, earth, chocolate, licorice, blueberry, pepper, and truffles. Syrah pairs well with all types of roasted, grilled or smoked meat dishes, including duck, beef, veal, sausage, and chicken.
