Rhone

Rhone wines are produced from grapes grown in the Rhone Valley in southern France and consists of two regions. In the hot and dry Southern Rhone Valley, the grapes produce wines lower in acidity and are lighter, sweeter, and lead to a more alcoholic wine than those in the northern part of the region. They are also fruitier, expressing sweet, ripe cherries, kirsch, black raspberry, and strawberry flavors. Southern Rhone reds can be paired with beef, pork, game, duck, lamb, sausage, or veal, while the whites pair well with most types of fish. In the Northern Rhone Valley, the wines can often be more tannic than the wines of the southern region, and can also require two decades or longer before they are ready to drink. Beef, pork, duck, lamb, and chicken pair well with Northern Rhone reds, while a variety of seafood pair well with the region's whites.
