Merlot

Merlot is the most commonly grown grape in France, the second most popular red grape in the U.S., and one of the world's most planted grape varieties. One of the primary grapes used in Bordeaux wine, Merlot is known for its low acidity and often has a plummy taste and notes of chocolate. There are two main styles of Merlot: The "International style" emphasizes later grape harvesting, which produces a wine full in body with a high alcohol content and intense plum and blackberry fruit flavors. The "Bordeaux style" of Merlot involves harvesting the grapes earlier to maintain acidity, which produces a more medium-bodied wine with moderate alcohol levels that offer fresh, red fruit flavors. This style adds body and softness to the wine. Merlots go equally well with many different types of food, depending on the style of Merlot, as well as on their own.
